Story (IP): An IP Asset Links an NFT to Protocol State
Story is an EVM-compatible Layer 1 designed for registering intellectual property and attaching programmable license and royalty terms. IP is its native gas and staking asset. This page focuses on an IP Asset Links an NFT to Protocol State and the checks users need before sending funds, paying fees or using the network.

An IP Asset Links an NFT to Protocol State
Registration creates an onchain object; it does not independently prove the registrant owns every underlying right.
NFT and IP Account
A user registers an eligible NFT as an IP Asset. Story deploys or associates an IP Account that can hold ownership, licensing, relationship and royalty state. Metadata and content references identify the work, while protocol contracts record interactions using Story Mainnet transactions paid in IP.
Verify wallet, chain ID, NFT contract, token ID, metadata, content hash and registrant authority before registration. Preserve original files and contracts outside the chain. A timestamp can show what was recorded, but cannot decide whether source material was copied or whether every contributor consented.
A license token points to terms; it is not an automatic court judgment.
Terms, derivatives and royalties
Licensors attach a supported license template to an IP Asset. Another user can mint a license token and, when permitted, register a derivative relationship. Royalty policies define how protocol-recognized payments are routed among linked IP Accounts. Commercial, attribution and derivative settings depend on the chosen terms.
Read the exact license before minting and confirm jurisdiction, offchain uses and payment asset. Register derivative links before publishing where required. Onchain royalty collection only covers flows routed through compatible contracts; private deals, infringement and external-platform revenue can require separate evidence and enforcement.
IP Also Secures Story Mainnet
The same symbol used in IP branding is the network gas and staking asset.
Gas, validators and delegation
Story runs an execution layer for EVM transactions and a consensus layer for validator staking. Validators and delegators stake IP, with current contracts supporting flexible or fixed-period positions, unbonding and validator commissions. Slashing, jailing, minimums and queue behavior are protocol risks.
Do not send stake to a nonexistent validator, confuse wrapped IP with native gas or assume a locked delegation can exit immediately. Verify validator address, commission, lock period, delegation ID and withdrawal status. Keep unlocked IP for contract gas and account changes.
Creators, licensees, developers and delegators need different evidence. Preserve the IP registration, license terms, linked files, royalty policy and transaction identifiers as one evidence set rather than treating a single token transfer as the complete legal record. Confirm jurisdiction-specific legal advice separately.
Rights and network checklist
Creators should confirm authorship records, NFT identity and license settings. Licensees should preserve the license token and applicable terms. Developers should test modules and payment flows. Delegators should verify validator and lock state. Every group should record Story transaction hashes and content versions.
Use legal review for material rights decisions and do not publish confidential source files as public metadata. Use developer tools for contracts and wallet tools for IP balances, while keeping offchain agreements linked to stable document identifiers.
A creator registers an NFT-backed IP Asset, an IP Account holds protocol state, license terms define permissions, and royalty modules route recorded payments while Story validators order transactions.
A Story transaction can execute successfully while the application state, contract permission or later exit remains wrong for the user's goal. IP is the market asset shown in the snapshot. IP pays Story transaction gas.
What Story users should verify and why this design differs
Onchain records do not independently prove legal ownership. Royalty routing covers compatible protocol flows.
For Story, the practical sequence is Choose network, Fund fee asset, Review action, Execute, Check finality. Confirm the official destination and current network, then inspect the final balance, position, receipt or documented exit state that actually completes the task: Register or license IP on Story while understanding onchain records, legal terms, gas and staking.
Story Network use FAQ
Does Story registration prove legal ownership?
It records an onchain claim and configuration; underlying rights still require valid evidence and law.
What pays Story gas?
Native IP pays Story Mainnet gas.
Does every external royalty flow automatically reach Story?
No. Payments must use compatible terms and routing, or be handled separately.
Known Limitations
Onchain records do not independently prove legal ownership.
Royalty routing covers compatible protocol flows.
The page does not register, license or stake an asset.
